tons of plastic waste end up in the sea every year
for plastic to degrade
comes from land-based sources –
the remaining 20% comes from marine sources
makes up the majority of plastic waste found in the Mediterranean Sea and coastlines
Every year, more and more plastic waste ends up in the Mediterranean Sea, causing significant adverse effects on marine life, human health as well as the whole ecosystem.
Unfortunately, too little plastic waste is recovered or recycled. This is due to a variety of reasons, including consumers lacking awareness of where and how to recycle, poor waste management practices and a weak collection/processing infrastructure. Plastic products and packaging will not disappear but have to be managed and reduced more sustainably.
Mismanaged plastic waste generated at Mediterranean coastal regions (waste which is either littered or inadequately disposed) is material which is at the highest risk of entering the Sea. It is important to take immediate and effective actions to make sure that more and more plastic waste is recovered and doesn’t end up in the Mediterranean Sea. It is important that all key stakeholders – from manufacturers and processors to consumers and recyclers – work towards a common goal, towards a circular and sustainable future.
We want to proactively prevent Mediterranean Sea pollution. With around 70% of its surface covered by sea, Earth is rightly known as the blue planet. The sea is also a major producer of the oxygen we breathe, making it a crucial part of our everyday life regardless of where we live. Sea plastic pollution is a huge environmental problem and we are determined to find solutions in a positive and proactive way. We are determined to #KeepSeaBlue.
We envision a world where plastic waste never enters the Mediterranean Sea –
rather it gets recovered, recycled and reused.
